This day in 1621 was the official beginning of New York. The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands issued a charter to the West India Company, giving them a monopoly on trade and settlement over the Americas. Ships were launched, and soon the Dutch bought the site of Nieue Amsterdam for the legendary $24 worth of beads. The company thrived only for a short while, the city was more durable.
