Index |Next => This day in 1621 was the official beginning of New York. The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands issued a charter to the West India Company, giving them a monopoly on trade and settlement over the Americas. Ships were launched, and soon the Dutch bought the site of Nieue Amsterdam for the legendary $24 worth of beads. The company thrived only for a short while, the city was more durable.
People say New Yorkers can't get along. Not true. I saw
two New Yorkers, complete strangers, sharing a cab. One guy
took the tires and the radio, the other guy took the engine. When you leave New York, you are astonished at how clean
the rest of the world is. Clean is not enough. It [New York City] is a great monument to the power of
money and greed ... a race for rent. New York is an exciting town where something is happening
all the time, most unsolved. New York is the perfect model of a city, not the model of
a perfect city. I find that if you take the various popular song forms to
their logical extremes, you can arrive at almost anything
from the ridiculous to the obscene or, as they say in New
York, sophisticated.
